How Is Allergic Rhinitis Treated

How is allergic rhinitis treated?

Generally speaking there are three important choices in treating allergic rhinitis. These involve: (1) Avoiding allergens, (2) drug treatment and/or (3) immunotherapy.

- Avoiding allergens

Totally eliminating the allergen is not always possible. However, there are ways which can be used to lessen its existence in the surrounding. Like for instance, if a person is allergic to pollen, he or she must always keep the car windows close, otherwise wear sunglasses when doing an outside activity.

- Drug Treatment

If a patient cannot avoid the allergens, he or she must resort to drug treatment. Most of these treatments include a corticosteroid nasal spray and antihistamines. These drugs are proven to be effective when used alone or both.

- Immunotherapy

This is done by injecting a patient with increasing doses of the known allergens for the body to fight and eventually get used to.
